Bed bugs are here in the Cayman Islands. This pest has become a major problem globally, spreading rapidly across continents mainly due to the increased number of people travelling. Adult bed bugs are oval, wingless, about 1/5 inch long and rusty or mahogany coloured. Their bodies are flattened thus enabling them to enter extremely small cracks and crevices. Common hiding places in our homes include seams in mattresses and box springs, cracks in bed frames, under loose wallpaper, behind picture frames and inside furniture and upholstery. Bed bugs feed on blood but are not considered disease carriers.
Control involves thorough inspections and application of pesticides in the infested areas, perhaps the removal of box springs and mattresses, steam cleaning and repairing cracks in walls and caulking windows and doors.
