Know Your Pests

Ants

All these species will invade your property. Some will nest in windows and door frames, others will nest in kitchen cupboards, wall voids as well as any cracks and crevices. Some will create large mounds in your yard and will bite.

Roaches

Some of these species will fly in from outdoors and become a nuisance, whilst others will be brought in in boxes, containers or even enter via septic tanks and grease traps. The German cockroach in particular can breed in your kitchen cabinets and large numbers can occur in a short space of time.

Rodents

Rodents gain entry to your home and business by finding holes as small as ¼ inch. The black rat is also known as the roof rat and normally climbs walls / trees to gain access to the roof.

Fleas

Flea eggs fall off the dog/cat onto carpets normally. These will develop into larvae and eventually into a pupae. The pupal stage can remain alive for several years if no blood meal is available. They can detect mammalian body heat and exhaled air and hatch immediately into adults.

Ticks

Ticks are a nuisance and can infest your home in huge numbers if proper action is not taken immediately they are noticed. Normally its dog owners that suffer tick infestations.

Centipedes

These have large claw like structures around their heads that contain venom. They forage during the night and eat small vertebrates and spiders.

Beetles & Weevils

There are many pests of foodstuff found in the Cayman Islands. These pests infest tobacco, seeds, cereal, nuts, grain, herbs etc.

Scorpions

Scorpions are very common in certain parts of the Cayman Islands. During the day they live under rocks in dark places including attics. They can easily climb walls gaining access to the attic in your home searching for food

Millipedes

Millipedes are generally harmless to humans, although some can become household or garden pests, especially in greenhouses where they can cause severe.

Wasps & Bees

Honey bees are only treated if they pose a real threat to people, ie: the hive has moved inside the house and only after contacting a bee keeper first.

Hornets

Hornets are the largest of the eusocial wasps, and are similar in appearance to their close relatives yellowjackets.

Mosquitoes

We have over 30 species of mosquitoes here in the Cayman Islands and 80% of them would be the black salt water mosquito (Aedes taeniorhynchus) that breeds in the black mangrove areas. Many of the other species breed in freshwater – cisterns, temporary pools, around the home in old buckets or pots – some even breed in septic tanks.

Chinch Bug

Chinch bugs use their piercing mouthparts to suck sap out of grass blades, and inject a substance into plants that interrupts water movement

White Grub

They feed on grass roots (and organic matter in the soil), causing sections of grass in the lawn to die. Grubs eventually turn into adult beetles

Army Worm

This destructive garden pest gets its name because it travels in small insect armies and consumes just about everything in its path.

Sod Webworm

Sod webworms live in the thatch, just above the soil, where they spin a light webbing and feed on the undersides of leaves.

Cutworms

Cutworms are moth larvae that hide under litter or soil during the day, coming out in the dark to feed on plants. A larva typically attacks the first part of the plant it encounters, namely the stem, often of a seedling, and consequently cuts it down; hence the name cutworm.
