Chinch bugs are major pests of turf grasses. They pierce grass blades with their mouthparts and then suck out vital plant juices. As they do, they release a substance that blocks the plant's vascular system and prevents it from drawing up moisture and nutrients it needs; grass dies as a result.

White grubs are the immature larvae of several species of scarab beetles. These extremely destructive turf pests feed on grass roots just below the soil surface, severing roots and causing lawn grasses to brown and die.

Armyworms are destructive pests that consume turf grasses, but they'll feed on vegetables and other plants when food is scarce. They eventually become moths, but it's the worm-like larvae stage that cause the most damage.

Common on houseplants and in greenhouses, the whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) is a sap-sucking insect that is often found in thick crowds on the undersides of leaves. When infested plants are disturbed, great clouds of the winged adults fly into the air. Both nymphs and adults damage plants by sucking the juices from new growth causing stunted growth, leaf yellowing and reduced yields.

Many different species of scale insects trouble gardeners. They get their name from protective scale-like coverings they produce, which are not part of the pest itself. Scale insects fall into two main categories: armored or soft. As the names suggest, armored scales produce a hard covering, while soft scale coverings are waxy and soft.

Some thrip species are beneficial insects, but others do serious damage to flowers, fruits and vegetables. Different types may attack specific plant families, but these pests strike garden favorites from roses, tomatoes and onions.
